Dinner with young kids

Let’s face it – dinner with young kids can be… well… challenging. Apart from the ‘not wanting to sit still’ thing, I get frustrated with the lack of child-friendly vegetables on the kids’ menu. Sure, the odd restaurant will have apple slices or grapes (much better than nothing), and some fancy places will have broccoli or something equally bizarre that most kids I know wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. Especially not mine.

I like taking the kids to Ruby Tuesday’s (at Kihei’s Safeway shopping center) because they have a salad bar. For an extra $1.99 kids can add salad bar to any of their kids’ menu items. And they LOVE going. Whether they are loading up only on grapes and pineapple, or actually creating their own salad, our kids are excited to select their vegetables. Love it!

What is Ruby Tuesday’s? It’s a chain sports-bar slash family-style restaurant. They have great burgers (the Smokehouse burger is pretty awesome). And if you go Wednesdays and Fridays, they have live music. Tonight’s singer was really good.

If you have a Costco membership, pick up $100 of Ruby’s gift cards for $80 (20% savings on your meal). Don’t confuse Ruby Tuesday’s with Ruby’s Diner (you can also get their gift cards at Costco in Kahului). Ruby’s Diner is a 40s style diner at Queen Kaahumanu Mall (good food, but no salad bar).
