|The Tai Mai – award winning mai tai by Hali’imaile’s
own bartender, Wendy Augustine.
You may recall, a year ago I wrote about the World Mai Tai competition… The 2013 title went to Maui’s very own bartender, Wendy Augustine, of Hali’imaile General Store.
I’m not a huge mai tai fan, but for you, my readers, I was willing to try it and report back. Today was the day – Sig and I went to Hali’imaile General Store for lunch. We had picked up gift certificates at Costco ($100 gift card for $80, a great deal) and we were up in the area anyway… The Hali’imaile General Store is part of the Bev Gannon family of restaurants (think Gannons and Red Bar at the Gold and Emerald Course in Wailea, and Joe’s in Wailea)
The mai tai was amazing. The picture does NOT do it justice. I highly recommend it. They call it the ‘Tai Mai’ on the cocktail menu. And did Wendy make it? Well, the first thing I noticed when we walked in the restaurant was that Wendy Augustine was indeed working the bar (I recognized her photo from the newspaper article last year). So I’d say – yes, most likely she did!
I enjoyed the fish special of the day which was a locally caught sword fish with asparagus, jasmine rice and a wonderful sauce. Sig had Bev’s famous ribs.
|my fish special – it was delicious|
You can find the Hali’imaile General Store restaurant in this historic building in the small pineapple town Hali’imaile, near Makawao. No, it is not a general store. It is actually a fine dining (sit-down) restaurant. Check it out – you will enjoy it!
