Mmmmm burgers!

We enjoy getting takeout, finding an oceanfront lawn and enjoying a sunset picnic with friends. We bring along a ball and frisbee and the kids burn some energy while we enjoy a visit.

One of our favorite picnic locations on the lawn near our Kihei Surfside condo

One of our favorite places to get burgers was Fat Boy Burgers across from Kalama Park, next to Starbucks.  This winter it was sold and has since reopened with a new menu as Stewart’s Burgers. So we’ve given it a try – twice! The burgers are really good! It’s a local mom and pop shop (yes, the owner’s name really is Stewart) that specializes in old-fashioned burgers, mixing up their own meat (from Big Island) and spices fresh every morning. Their buns are baked locally and their veggies come from a farm in Kula!

I must admit, I haven’t eaten my way through their menu yet. We’ve tried their “Kihei” burgers, their beer-battered onion rings (oh so good) and sweet potato fries. They have everything from basic to specialty burgers and yes, also hotdogs if your kids don’t like burgers.

The Maui Time recently wrote a feature article about Stewart’s Burgers – have a read and go pick up dinner!

Lunch at Mulligan’s on the Blue

Did you know, we have a great Irish pub/sports bar here in Wailea with a beautiful view? Mulligan’s on the Blue is located on the Wailea Blue Course (the first golf course south of the Wailea hotels, near Polo Beach).

They do have local beer on tap – but we had to have Guinness and Kilkenny to go with the mahi mahi fish and chips!

If you come here in the evening, they have a bagpiper playing at sunset, and there is live music in the evenings, some evenings dinner shows with Maui’s own Willie K.

While waiting for our food, I kept myself busy trying to take a picture of the two red-crested cardinals that just wouldn’t stay in one place long enough for me to take a picture! Probably because our food hadn’t arrived yet!

Pupus at Gannon’s Red Bar

We have been going to Gannon’s at Wailea’s Emerald Course for years now – but only for brunch and lunch. My wonderful condo cleaning lady Cindy has told me how wonderful their happy hour is (happy hour is in their bar area, called the Red Bar). So yesterday, we checked out Gannon’s Red Bar happy hour. Wow.

the beautiful view from Gannon’s Restaurant

The great thing about the Red Bar’s happy hour is – 50% off pupus (appetizers) between 3-6pm (they also have drink specials). They had a great selection! Between the four of us, we sampled the Trio of Deviled Eggs, Crab Stuffed Jalapenos, BBQ Chicken Nachos ‘Dip’ (I had this – it was fabulous), Trio of Crabcake Sliders and Tater Tots. With drinks our bill came in at around $70. Not bad for four people. We’ll have to go again! Thanks for the tip, Cindy!

This month 19 restaurants (some are award-winning restaurants with celebrity chefs) have teamed up to provide you with prix-fixe menu deals, either $29, $39 or $49/three course dinner. You don’t need tickets or special passes, but reservations are strongly recommended.

Go try a new restaurant – or re-visit a favorite!

Have you been to Mama’s Fish House?

There is a lot of hype surrounding dinner (or lunch) at Mama’s Fish House. Mama’s is located in just past Pai’a (just before the lookout) and has been in business for 30 years now. They are known for serving wonderfully prepared fresh fish with a beautiful view.

In all the years of coming on vacation and now living here, we had never been to Mama’s… So recently I made reservations online (directly on their website which links you to Open Table). I also made a comment in the reservation that it was my birthday, hoping it would net us a better table….

Mama’s has valet parking (and a rather small parking lot, so that’s a good thing). We dropped off our car, then walked across the beautiful grounds to the restaurant. I’ve always heard it is gorgeous, and it definitely is.

We had front row seating (right next to the window) – hey, the birthday thing worked (and for the record, it really was my birthday, no lie!)

front row seating with a great ocean view!
birthday greeting waiting for us at the table – awww

Lunch was pricey, but we had done our homework and that was no surprise.

I had the lehi (red snapper) – it was mild and delicious
Sig had their signature dish, the crab-stuffed mahi mahi with lobster tail

apple-banana macademia nut crumble – so delicious… I will definitely need to make this with our next harvest of apple bananas.

After lunch we rolled ourselves back out of the restaurant – we definitely ate too much. But it was well worth it!

another picture outside Mama’s… yes, I am overdressed – but on Maui there aren’t that many occasions to dress up, so I went for it!
